Hip hop is(n’t) dead: PremRock and Has-Lo
“Kill your idols.” -PremRock
This past Saturday, New York City hip hop fans braved intermittent snow flurries and an L-train closure1 for an evening at Cameo Gallery, which played host to a tetrad of groups representing a cross-section of the northeast underground. The night began with Boston trio Grey Sky Appeal – whose self-released sophomore effort2 has earned comparisons3 to the Beastie Boys. This was followed by a performance from Portland, Maine based Brzowski4 (accompanied by NYC’s DJ Halo) – who blessed the crowd with his very own blend of “east coast weirdo shit”5.
Next up from Philadelphia, Has-Lo6 and Zilla Rocca7 brought the house down with audience favorites including “Everything Is” and Death Cab for Cutie-infused “The Quiet Things”8. The night was capped off by New Yorker (via Philadelphia) PremRock, who rhymed over live beats by producer Willie Green [above]. The set featured material from the pair’s eponymous album9, including Prem’s verses from recent collaboration-turned-video10 with L.A. emcee Open Mike Eagle. Remix project “PremRock & Willie Green: Reassembled” drops on March 12th – you can download Blockhead’s take on “Radio Dial”, featuring verses by Has-Lo, HERE. More photos below.

Hearts of the World FUTURE mix
As Isn’t Presents: Hearts of the World – FUTURE mix
Two years ago, Nicolina1 created Hearts of the World2, a collaborative art project featuring children across the globe. Participants are given anatomical heart templates, which they fill with artistic visions — images representing their dreams and aspirations.
Following initial workshops at The Lower Eastside Girls Club3, Nicolina has brought Hearts of the World to New Orleans, Seattle, Japan, Mexico, Chile, China and Brazil. As the project continues to expand, Nicolina plans to arrange the panels into large-scale installations showcasing diversity and the universality of creative expression.
Our Hearts of the World – FUTURE mix is inspired by the artwork of Moon [above], a student from Zhuhai, China. The nine-year old describes her illustration as: “The way I would like the future to be.”
